Traditions

Hello families! We have started our study of family and holiday traditions around te world. Today we read about the right days of Hanukkah and then made our own Menorahs. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot!

Our visit to the Ealy house

We have started our unit on Life Long Ago with a visit to the Ealy House here in New Albany. The Ealy house is one of the oldest dwellings in New Albany. The students had a chance to see what life was like in 1860. We used a machine to take kernels off of corn cobs, learned how clothing and material were produced, and saw some of the toys and games that children played with. It was a fun beginning to a great unit!

Halloween Party

I would like to thank our room parents, as well as those parents who came to volunteer at the party. What a great success! The kids had so much fun! The witches fingers were a great touch!

Red Ribbon Week!

As part of Red Ribbon Week, K-1 School Counselor Mrs. Schubert has planned a series of spirit days.  In case you missed the letter in your child's backpack, you can read it by clicking here.  In summary, here are the themes for this week:
Monday — “My Future Is Bright” (wear bright colorful clothes)
Tuesday -- "Speak Up For Kindness" (wear clothing with words)
Wednesday -- "Everyone Counts" (wear a jersey or shirt with numbers)
Thursday -- "Eagle Pride" (New Albany sportswear)
Each of these spirit days is very low-key, so please do not worry if you don't have something that matches the theme for your child to wear.

Writers Workshop

Today for Writers Workshop we shared some of the "small moments" stories that we have been working on. These personal narratives are another exercise in putting stories in order using transitional words such as First, Next, and Finally. We then read them out loud to see how they sound and to listen for any mistakes that we need to fix. We also had a discussion about proper voice levels for speaking in front of an audience.

New friends!

This week we had the chance to have a real Ohio State Buckeye come and read to our class. Darron Lee was the quarterback for the New Albany Eagles before he went to OSU. He was nice enough to come in and talk about how important reading and writing are in college and even for football! The kids really enjoyed the visit.

Top it!

IToday we are playing Top-it! First we make our own playing cards up to 20. Then we each put out a card and figure out which one is greater. The one with the most cards at the end wins!

Busy Friday!!

Whew! We've been very busy today! We started our day with mystery pictures on a number grid. These will be used as a "math by myself" activity during math centers. Then came a fire drill! After that we had our yearly health screening. When we got back to the room we had a visit from Jalen Ward, the quarterback from our New Albany Eagles! He read Dr. Suess to us and answered a few questions too. What a great Friday! Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

A new friend!

We had a great day on Friday when Mr. Stankowski visited our class and talked to us about how our bodies are machines. He taught us how to use our voices in different ways such as volume, pace, and speed. These skills will be used frequently during the year. We then combined all of our little machines into one big one and tried to change our volume all together! It was a challenge at first, but it all came together! We can't wait for his next visit!

Happy Friday families! Unfortunatly I have some bad news. Darron Lee, a player for the OSU Buckeyes, was supposed to come in and read to our class today, but has had to cancel due to scheduling issues. I am hoping that we will be able to reschedule with Darron soon. I'm guessing that these players have pretty hectic schedules! Hopefully the kids won't be too upset. Have a great day!

Here are some photos of our class that were taken during the fun walk. I kind of wish they would have waited until this week so that it would have been a bit cooler! We still had lots of fun though!

Tally mark dice rolling!

Today we spent some time learning and playing a new game! We rolled a dice 20 times and recorded the rolls using tally marks! Fun was had by all, and some learning is happening as well!
